Food waste in kitchen sink

Take the Stress Out of Your Kitchen: Drain Do’s and Don’ts

No one likes a clogged drain. They’re supposed to drain when you put stuff in them, so why is there a problem? This is partially true, but a little caution can eliminate the headache and inconvenience of a clogged drain. The following should help keep your drains clear and free of issues.

Things Not to Put Down Your Kitchen Sink Drain

To keep your kitchen drains clear, avoid putting the following in them:

  • Grease: This probably clogs more drains than anything else. Whether it’s melted grease, vegetable oil, or any other type of fat, it shouldn’t go down the drain.
  • Food particles: Solid food particles are a haven for fats, especially if the fat has solidified. Instead, put the food particles in the garbage can or compost pile.
  • Hair: Like food particles, hair can generate a complex clog that will have you calling the plumber.

Maintenance to Ensure a Clear Drain

Even if your drain isn’t clogged, a little maintenance can keep it that way. Start by pouring a gallon of boiling water down the drain. The hot water should flush most of the debris down the pipes.

Next, pour at least a half-cup of dry baking soda into the drain. Follow that with twice the amount of distilled vinegar. The mixture will bubble up, creating a chemical reaction that dissolves solid particles. Repeat the boiling water flush; your drain should be free and clear.

How to Clear a Clog

If you have a grease clog, pour at least a gallon of boiling water down it first. The hot water should flush some of the grease and make it easier to eliminate the remainder. It’s okay to use more than a gallon of hot water, but the amount primarily depends on the size of the clog and how much fat it contains.

Next, pour a half-cup of dry baking soda into the drain, followed by a fourth-cup of kosher salt. Follow that with about a cup of distilled vinegar. This will bubble up and create a chemical reaction that will dissolve some or all of the clog.

Wait a few minutes, then repeat the boiling water flush. You may need to repeat this entire process several times, but it should clear your drain.

If the clog doesn’t clear, consider buying a small plunger for use solely in the kitchen. There’s always the option of commercial drain cleaners, but the trend is away from the toxic substances, especially for those with pets or children.
